Nov 2013: In a state where walking naked, marrying under-aged girls, defecating and littering in the public are tolerated, a town court chairperson has expressed determination to enforce a ban preventing all women in his jurisdiction of Unity State from chewing gum.

Simon Gatjuat Jal, the court chairperson, told the local Eye Radio station that the sight of girls chewing gum along the road is “irresponsible and embarrassing” and needs to be addressed immediately with a ban enforceable by the rule of law.

“If you see your newlywed wife chewing gum, it can even force you to divorce her,”

“I will confirm from the commissioner if it is good for young women whose bride price has been paid and girls to chew in the market.” He told the local Naath FM.
